From Bus:
From Rishikesh, a 213 kms. journey by road takes one to Hanuman-chatti. From here, the remaining 13 kms. trek is covered on foot or on ponies. Palanquins and Porters are also available on hire.
The sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of Bandar Poonch Parvat. The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Jankichatti (7 km. Away).
The temple of Yamuna is on the left bank of Yamuna constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The deity is made of black marble. The Yamuna like Ganga has been elevated to the status of divine mother for the Hindus and has been held responsible for nurturing and developing the Indian civilization.
Best time to Visit Yamunotri:
The best time to visit Yamunotri is between May-June and September-November. Due to heavy rainfall in the area, visitors may face difficulty reaching the temple during monsoon season (late June to Aug). The temple usually remains open from last week of April to 2nd week of November.
The weather in Yamunotri during Summer is cool during the day and cold at night. And in winters it is Snow-bound with temperature touching to sub-zero.
Places to Visit in Yamunotri
- Temple of Goddess Yamuna: The temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century. It was destroyed twice in the present century and rebuilt again. The temple remains closed from November to May.
- Surya Kund: There are a number of thermal springs in the vicinity of the temple which flow into numerous pools. The most important of these is Surya Kund.
- Divya Shila: A rock pillar, worshipped before entering the Yamunotri Temple.
- Sayanachatti: 29 kms from Barkot is a scenic spot on the banks of river Yamuna.
- Jankichatti: Noted for its thermal springs, where tourists can enjoy a refreshing bath.
- Hanumanchatti: The confluence of Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna rivers, from where the trek to Dodi Tal (3,307 mts) starts.
Only Dharamshalas are available at Yamunotri with few hotels. Alternative accommodation is also available like camps. There is a Tourist Rest House (GMVN) at Janki Chatti.
Only local eating houses (dhabas) are available. Non-vegetarian food and alcoholic drinks are prohibited in Yamunotri.
